Reasoning about a Leaf and the Climate
One connected reasoning episode: predict how two ideas connect, explain the mechanism, change one condition, and reason about what follows — committing before the atlas reveals.

Understand the structure and function of plant organs and the material transformation in photosynthesis. · 2. Klasse (6. Schulstufe)
Exact wording: „Struktur und Funktion der Pflanzenorgane, Stoffumwandlung bei der Fotosynthese“
How this official objective connects, through canonical knowledge, to what a learner actually does — each link is real data, never a coverage claim.
Canonical concept
- How each concept relates to the objective
- named — The objective's own wording names this concept.
- required — You must grasp this concept to meet the objective.
Relations & mental models
3 canonical relations connect these concepts
- Photosynthesis depends on Light (sunlight)

Understand that materials and energy carriers largely move through closed cycles in ecological systems, and that human activity can alter these cycles. · 1.–4. Klasse (zentrales fachliches Konzept)

Activities & expected evidence
- Predict an effect
Before the atlas shows you: how do you think photosynthesis and carbon dioxide are connected?
Expected evidence: predicted a relationship
- Explain the mechanism
You will change this system in a moment. First, explain in your own words HOW more carbon dioxide leads to a stronger greenhouse effect — the mechanism, not just the fact.
Expected evidence: explained a relationship
- Reason about a what-if
Now change one thing in the system and reason about what follows.
Expected evidence: predicted a what-if outcome
- Transfer to a new field
You just reasoned about a self-correcting balance in the carbon system. Which of these run on the SAME feedback structure?
Expected evidence: transferred a pattern, revised a model
- Reflect
Reflect on what changed in your reasoning.
Expected evidence: reflected
Transfer challenge
You just reasoned about a self-correcting balance in the carbon system. Which of these run on the SAME feedback structure?
Carbon cycle → Balancing loop, Reinforcing loop
What carries over: In both, flows respond to the level of a stock: a change in the stock changes the flows, which feed back to change the stock again. The loop — sense, respond, adjust — is the same, whether the stock is atmospheric carbon or a number.
Where the analogy breaks: The real carbon system has many overlapping loops at once — oceans, soils, forests, permafrost — with long delays, so it can tip from balancing toward reinforcing. A single loop is a useful sketch, not the whole system.
